Here’s a Korean trekking holiday with a difference. In May this year South Korea opened up what a trek that is still technically a war zone – along the DMZ that separates North and South Korea.
The DMZ (De-Militarized Zone) refers to a 2km wide buffer zone where no military personnel or equipment is permitted. It is basically a fence that spans the width of the Korean peninsula, dividing it in two.
Crossing the border from one country to another isn’t an option, North Korea being perhaps the most difficult country in the world to journey to.
What is an option now though is to hike the entire length on the South Korean side.
The main trek is 182km in length, and is comprised of 12 different sections. The trek is well signposted and consists of paths – this is definitely not a wilderness trek and it will be hard to get lost.
As you can imagine what you see along the way can vary wildly. On one hand you’ll see historical and cultural buildings, forests, ordinary South Korea. On the other you’ll see barbed wire fences, border guards and glimpses of North Korea.
You can either hike the entire length your self find guided tours.
For me the difference between North and South Korea is summed up perfectly in one startling image taken by satellite at night and showing the two countries
